How to Open Your Garage Door When the Power Goes Out

In the event of a power outage, your garage door opener will no longer be able to function. It should be fairly obvious why it won’t work, but it is because there is no power being supplied to the garage door opener, and it cannot defy gravity and open on its own. In the event that the power goes out, your garage door will not open, and it will essentially be locked closed. It is a fairly simple procedure to open your garage door without power, but many people are unaware of it.

There is an emergency release cord that typically hangs down from the center rail of the garage door mechanism. This will be located near the garage door opener. Simply pull the emergency cord down, and this will disconnect the garage door from the garage door opener. Once you have disconnected the garage door from the garage door opener by using the emergency release cord, it is a fairly simple procedure to get your door open without power.

Simply lift the garage door upwards until it is open fully. It is important to make sure that the garage door is fully open before walking away from it. If the garage door is not open all the way it will most likely fall back down. Even if the garage door is open all the way it can sometimes close on its own. If this is the case, prop open the garage door by using a piece of wood or another object that will not break from the weight of the garage door.

If you follow these steps you are guaranteed to be able to open your garage door during a power outage. This means that you will not be stuck inside your house without being able to use your vehicle, as you can easily open the door without power.
